Описание

Built in 1963, the Arecibo Observatory in Puerto Rico was the most powerful radar astronomers used to observe planets for decades. However, in November the National Science Foundation (NSF) deemed the telescope structure unstable and recommended controlled destruction. The news of the facility which drew 90,000 visitors each year and was famous for being featured in a 1995 James Bond film buzzed Twitter with #WhatAreciboMeansToMe in the past weeks. Unfortunately, less than two weeks later the telescope’s receiver platform, weighing 900 tonnes, collapsed 450 feet into the 1000-feet-wide dish below, smashing it. With that, the world’s second-largest single dish-radio was no more.
