The celebration of This day was started by the United Nations World Tourism Organization in the year 1980. On the same day in the year 1970, the constitution of the World Tourism Organization was accepted. In Istanbul in 1997, the 12th UNWTO General Assembly decided that every year one of the countries of the organization can have allies to celebrate this day. Every year since 1980, different countries have hosted this day. This day has been chosen because of this.

According to the UNWTO, this day i.e. September 27 is special for this day because it falls at the end of the high tourist season in the Northern Hemisphere and at the beginning of the tourist season in the Southern Hemisphere.
