Will the Australian Stock Market Experience a Santa Rally in 2020?

Financial markets frequently rise in December through to early January, which is often referred to as a Santa Claus Rally. However, this year many experts are uncertain about the direction of the stock market through this period given that markets around the world have already risen strongly to recover from the decline that occurred in the first half of this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Some experts are even speculating that the markets are due for another correction in 2020.

Given that it can be challenging to predict when the stock market will rise or fall, what do investors need to know to navigate their way through this period? Of most importance, is the ability to understand historical trends in the market, as this provides an indication of where it will likely head in the future. In fact, over the past five years, despite all of the variables that would normally affect the stock market, Santa’s festive cheer boosted the Australia stock market.
