Almaty - February 8 - Goodbye, Almaty! Hello, Krasnoyarsk!

The amazing student event that has been cheering sport fans from many countries of the world for the past two weeks ended. Today, the official Closing Ceremony of the 28th World Winter Universiade took place in Almaty. 12,000 spectators have gathered on the stands of the Almaty Arena. Along with the vast group of sport fans, who has been watching the Ceremony on television, the audience sadly and with a sinking heart watched the Universiade flame fade.

The winning athletes of the Universiade were honored at the Closing Ceremony. Other participants, who waged a fair fight, were also celebrated. A colorful musical show was put up for the spectators.

The Prime Minister of the Republic of Kazakhstan Bakytzhan Sagintayev, the President of the International University Sports Federation Oleg Matytsin, the Mayor of Almaty Bauyrzhan Baibek and the Mayor of Krasnoyarsk Edkham Akbulatov spoke in front of the audience. Mr. Akbulatov arrived in Almaty in order to accept the FISU flag, present the city that will host the 2019 Winter Universiade and tell about the most interesting episodes in the history and culture of Krasnoyarsk.

Shortly before the beginning of the Closing Ceremony the last two sets of awards had been competed for. A 30km mass start race in cross country skiing took place at the Alatau Complex. At the finish of the race, athletes from Russia and Kazakhstan competed for the victory. Dmitriy Rostovtsev from Russia finished first. His compatriot Valeriy Gontar was slower by 0.3 seconds. The third to finish was Sergey Malyshev from Kazakhstan (+0.5 seconds).

At the same time, final ice hockey games took place at the Halyk Arena. In a fight for the bronze medal, Canada beat the Czech Republic (4:3). Russia and Kazakhstan, long-time competitors and friends, played in a game for the first place. Two periods of the game saw no goals. However, in the beginning of the third period, Daniil Ilin from Russia scored a goal. The home team tried to win back and attempted several attacks. The attempts were unsuccessful and the final score was 1:0. Russia won the gold, while Kazakhstan took the silver.

In the informal team rating of the Universiade, Russia took the first place (29 gold, 27 silver, and 15 bronze medals). Kazakhstan (11, 8, 17) and Korea (11, 5, 5) are on the second and the third place respectively. In total, 85 sets of medals were awarded at the Universiade. Athletes from 26 countries became the medal winners.
