Rath Yatra 2020: Jagannathji temple priests perform Jal Yatra amidst lockdown

Priests from Ahmedabad’s Jagannathji temple performed the first ceremony of the annual Rath Yatra fest on June 5. Jal Yatra is the first ceremony and it involves drawing water from Sabarmati river, carrying it on the back of elephants and performing ‘abhishek’ of the deities at the temple. Generally, a grand affair involving 10-odd elephants and about 1,500 devotees, this year only 15 people participated in the ceremony due to the restrictions in place against the COVID-19 pandemic. The temple authorities are determined to carry out the annual Rath Yatra, a 143-year-old tradition while observing all COVID-19 safety mandates.
