The Sonepur fair is the largest cattle fair in Asia to be held in Bihar. Elephant, horse and many animals are sold and bought in this fair. This fair is already famous for years. It is told about the history of this fair that many Raja Maharajas along with the founder of Maurya dynasty Chandragupta, Akbar and Veer Kunwar Singh used to come here to buy elephants. At that time, this fair was decorated in a very beautiful way. In 1803, Robert Clive also built a stables in Sonpur. There was a time when Mallika Gulab Bai of Nautanki was lit in Sonepur fair. People used to come from far and wide to enjoy their gimmick. It has now taken the form of theater.
Before Mughal emperor Aurangzeb, this fair used to be held in Hajipur in Sonpur. Only Baba Harihar Nath was worshiped in Sonpur. But later, after Aurangzeb's order, the fair also started in Sonpur. In 2001, the number of elephants in Sonepur was 91. Whereas in 2004, 354 elephants reached Sonepur. Whereas in 2016 the number of elephants was 13. But now they come to Sonpur just for demonstration. Various types of sports and competitions are also organized at Boat Race, Dangal in Sonepur fair.
According to mythological beliefs, this place is also known as Gajendra Moksha Sthal. It is believed that there was a fight between two devotees of Bhagwan, ie elephant's yard and crocodile. When Gaja came to drink water at the Konhar Ghat, Graha caught him by the mouth and both started fighting. The war went on for several days. Meanwhile, when Gaja started getting weak, he prayed to Lord Vishnu. Lord Vishnu ended this war by running the Sudarshan Chakra on the day of Kartik Purnima. Animal shopping is considered auspicious due to the war of two animals. At this place, there is also Hari i.e. Lord Vishnu and Hari i.e. #Harihartemple of Lord Shiva. Hundreds of devotees come here every day for Jalabhishek, it is said that Lord Ram built this temple while going to the Swayamvara of Mother Sita.
This is the first time in the history of Sonepur fair when Sonepur fair has to be closed in the year 2020. In such a situation, it is a shock to animal lovers.
